Hospice Billing Update Effective June 1, 2022

This Provider Alert replaces the March 19, 2021 hospice billing Provider Alert referenced here.

As of March 1, 2021, providers could submit the National Provider Identifier (NPI) of the residing nursing facility in Box 77 (operating provider) on their UB-04 claims form when billing revenue code 658. This allowed for a more expedient processing of their submitted claims.

Since March 1, 2021, we have continued to allow providers to bill the nursing facility NPI in Box 80. However, effective June 1, 2022, Iowa Total Care will require providers to bill with the NPI in Box 77 and will no longer process claims with the NPI in Box 80.

This is only for hospice room and board claims where payment is determined by the nursing facility NPI.  You may include the nursing facility name in Box 77b if you would like, but only the nursing facility NPI should be in Box 77a.
