CAHPS Survey
Date: 02/23/26
Iowa Total Care understands that strong provider-patient relationships are essential to delivering high-quality care and patient satisfaction.
To better understand member needs, Iowa Total Care partakes in the annual Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) survey each year. CAHPS is a standardized survey tool that asks patients to evaluate their experience with their health plan and providers.
Based on Iowa Total Care’s 2025 CAHPS survey results, members identified strength in these areas:
- Getting Needed Care
- Getting Care Quickly

Based on Iowa Total Care’s 2025 CAHPS survey results, members identified some opportunities with
our providers:
- Rating of Healthcare Quality
- How Well Doctors Communicate
The CAHPS survey asks members to rate the overall quality of their healthcare on a 0-10 scale.
Incorporate the following into your daily practice:
- CAHPS Measure: Rating of Healthcare Quality
- Encourage members to make their routine appointments for checkups or follow up visits as soon as they can – weeks or even months in advance.
- Ensure that open care gaps are addressed during each member visit.
- Make use of the provider portal when requesting prior authorizations.
- CAHPS Measure: How Well Doctors Communicate
- Involve members in decision-making and share goals for treatment.
- Inform members of office procedures, such as when they can expect a call with lab results, how follow-up appointments are scheduled and routine wait times.
- Have a plan for interpreter access. An interpreter with a medical background is preferred rather than family or friends of the member.
