CAHPS Survey

Iowa Total Care understands that the provider-patient relationship is a key component in ensuring exceptional healthcare and satisfaction among members.

To assist with understanding member needs, Iowa Total Care partakes in the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) survey each year.

CAHPS is a standardized survey tool that asks patients to evaluate their experience with their health plan and at providers’ offices and focuses on the member’s experience over the previous six months.

Based on Iowa Total Care’s 2024 CAHPS survey results, members identified strength in these areas:

  • Getting Needed Care
  • Getting Care Quickly

  • Getting appointments and care quickly.
  • Getting needed care.
  • Rating of personal doctor. 
  • Rating of health care quality.
  • Clinical outcomes.
  • Care coordination.
  • Patient engagement in their own care.
  • Patient loyalty.
  • Medication adherence.
  • Ratings.


Based on Iowa Total Care’s 2024 CAHPS survey results, members identified some opportunities with
our providers:

  • Rating of Healthcare Quality
  • Rating of Personal Doctor


The CAHPS survey asks members to rate the overall quality of their healthcare on a 0-10 scale. Incorporate the following into your daily practice:

  • CAHPS Measure: Rating of Health Care Quality
    • Encourage members to make their routine appointments for checkups or follow up visits as soon as they can – weeks or even months in advance.
    • Ensure that open care gaps are addressed during each member visit.
    • Make use of the provider portal when requesting prior authorizations.
  • CAHPS Measure: Rating of Personal Doctor
    • Use the teach-back method to check for member understanding and to improve
      member-provider communication.
    • Gather and analyze member feedback on their most recent office visit.
    • Promote the use of online member portals which allow members to access their medical records and healthcare information.
